This is a temporary (roughly 1 month) contract position with the possibility of extension and/or full-time work.

We are seeking an experienced ophthalmic technologist to carry out in-home diabetic retinopathy exams and to distribute lab-in-an-envelope test kits to health plan members.

The territory you will cover for this contract assignment will be:

  • Brooklyn
  • Queens
  • Staten Island
  • West/East Bronx
  • Spring Valley
  • Buffalo (you will also be expected to travel for approximately 2-3 days)

You will be compensated by hour with an attractive bonus for completed home visits. The company will also reimburse you for mileage and will pay for your travel and accommodations for you overnight stay in Buffalo.

The company will provide you with a portable retinal camera and training in addition to all necessary supplies and accessories.

Retina Labs USA Inc. is a leading provider of teleretinal screening solutions for early detection of eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy. Roughly 40%-45% of Americans diagnosed with diabetes have some stage of diabetic retinopathy. However, only about half are aware of it. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of severe visual impairment in the working-age population. Patient adherence with screening guidelines is critical to prevent blindness from diabetic eye disease. Through both in-clinic and in-home care delivery models, Retina Labs helps primary care providers, heath systems and health plans close diabetic eye exam and other critical diabetes care gaps.

Responsibilities:

  • Schedule appointments with patients assigned to you.
  • Travel to patient homes and arrive on time as scheduled.
  • Explain the test procedure(s) to patients and hand out educational information as provided by the company.
  • Transport retinal imaging equipment/accessories and prepare for exam procedure as per company protocol.
  • Conduct retinal exams by taking images for the patient’s left and right eyes and validate image quality as per company’s clinical standards.
  • Transmit retinal images to company’s teleretinal screening platform.
  • If required, and whenever possible, collect an A1c and blood glucose samples (finger prick), micro albumin (urine sample) and leave behind colorectal screening kit for patient to self-complete at their leisure.
  • Ensure accurate labeling of lab sample kits and return to lab testing center as per company procedure.
  • Complete patient forms as required (paper and/or electronic) and secure patient signature at end of home visit.
  • Compile and submit weekly visit reports to operations manager.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, college degree preferred; or one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Reliable transportation that would enable you to travel to multiple patient homes during the day.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.
  • Willingness to travel beyond your immediate area with possible overnight stays an asset.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings an asset.
  • Prior healthcare experience and/or knowledge of eye care, ophthalmic imaging or diabetes care is a definite asset.Desire to gain healthcare industry knowledge and training.
  • Ability to use computer software (Word, Excel, Outlook) and maintain digital medical records in the company’s software systems.
  • Fluency in English. Fluency in Spanish a definite asset.
  • Excellent time management and communication skills.

You will be responsible for performing in-home patient visits to conduct retinal eye exams using an easy-to-operate handheld retinal imaging device. You may also be required to administer additional preventive screening tests using sample collection kits provided to you.

You are compensated very competitively, as you are paid on a Per Patient Visit fee structure. This means that you have the flexibility to set your schedule, and you can adjust your visits, depending on what fits with your circumstances and lifestyle.
